Ōishi Matora Prior to Teika’s Hyakunin isshu, this poem appeared in the Shika wakashū (Collection of verbal flowers, 1154) as Hyakunin isshu a love poem. In Kuniyoshi’s depiction, however, the image refers to the time after Sutoku’s forced abdication hitoyogatari and failed revolt in 1156, when he was banished to Sanuki (present-day Kagawa prefecture).

The poet, Ariwara no Yukihira (818-893), was the half-brother of Narihira (see Poem 17, below). The poem is assumed to have been composed as Yukihira was about to take up his post as governor of the province of Inaba (currently eastern Tottori Prefecture) in 855. The Hyakunin Isshu is a collection of one hundred poems composed between the 8th and 13th century CE and compiled in 1235. The collection was developed into a popular poem-recognition card game first introduced in the 17th century and still popular in Japan today. This is a collection of 100 specimens of Japanese Tanka poetry collected in the 13th Century C.E., with some of the poems dating back to the 7th Centry.Tanka is a 31 syllable format in the pattern 5-7-5-7-7.
